Poplar Grove Golf Club, designed by Sam Snead and Ed Carton and nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a hidden gem that is a bit off the beaten path. The course features a winding par 5 on the front nine that is one of the most challenging holes I have ever played. The course itself has a ton of character, and playing it is like taking a step back in time. One of the unique features of Poplar Grove Golf Club is its clubhouse, which is called the Manor House and was built in 1776. The clubhouse adds to the historical charm of the course, and it’s a great place to relax after a round of golf. There are some homes on the course, but not on every hole, which allows golfers to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the surroundings. The front nine winds through the woods, while the back nine is more open and features a large pond in the middle, which comes into play on multiple holes. Overall, Poplar Grove Golf Club is a must-play course for anyone who loves golf and appreciates natural beauty and history. The course is challenging yet rewarding, and the setting is serene and picturesque.
